Die Zusatztafel „Metropolregion Rhein-Neckar“ an touristischen Hinweisschildern macht die Region für Reisende auf den regionalen Autobahnen (A5, A6, A61/65/67) sichtbar. Insgesamt 27 braune Tafeln mit dem Namen und dem Logo der Metropolregion sollen Rhein-Neckar in seiner Vielfalt sowie seiner landschaftlichen und touristischen Charakteristik für Besucher und Vorbeifahrer aus dem In- und Ausland unmittelbar erlebbar machen.

Mit der Installation der Tafeln wird buchstäblich Gutes im Schilde geführt: ein Symbol der Einheit der Rhein-Neckar-Region als Lebens- und Kulturraum über drei Bundesländer und sieben Landkreise hinweg

Die Idee, Hinweise auf touristischen und kulturellen Besonderheiten durch eine Zusatztafel in der Metropolregion Rhein-Neckar zu verorten, stammt bereits aus dem Jahr 2005. Zehn Jahre später bekam das Vorhaben von den drei Ministerpräsidenten Winfried Kretschmann, Malu Dreyer und Volker Bouffier endlich grünes Licht.

Der Verband Region Rhein-Neckar finanziert und organisiert die Umsetzung, die für jedes Bundesland unterschiedlich und daher entsprechend komplex ist. Gemein ist dem Prozess, dass für die Genehmigung zunächst das Einverständnis des Eigentümers des jeweiligen touristischen Hinweisschilds eingeholt sowie eine Erklärung über die Übernahme der Kosten abgegeben werden muss. Es folgt eine Detailabstimmung über die Gestaltung des Zusatzschilds, die durch die bundesweit gültige „Richtlinie für die touristische Beschilderung“ geregelt ist. Darüber hinaus werden im Genehmigungsverfahren auch Fragen nach der Anbringung, Pflege und ggf. der Erneuerung oder Wiederbeschaffung der Zusatztafeln erörtert. Erst wenn alle offenen Punkte geklärt sind und die Einzelgenehmigungen für die 27 Schilder vorliegen, kann mit der Montage begonnen werden. Die insgesamt 27 Zusatzschilder werden daher nach und nach in den nächsten Jahren angebracht.
